George Melrose & Jane Schofield

George Melrose was a Sapper & Miner with the Royal Engineers.

George MELROSE and Jane SCHOFIELD sailed from Plymouth, UK on 9 August 1852 and after being at sea for 122 days arrived in Tasmania, Australia on 9 December 1852. George was a Sapper & Miner of the Royal Engineers. Later the family moved to Sydney and George became a licensed Surveyor.

This maternal Melrose branch has been transplanted to Aussie soil for 7 generations so far.

This Melrose history is a collaboration of work compiled by Tim Carter, Susan Channell, Sandy Liddle, Peggy Lucas and myself.

Mary Ann (Irvine) Melrose - WikiTree Profile

I am delighted to say the whereabouts and death of the elusive Mary Ann Melrose nee Irvine has been found in Australia, she travelled aboard the "Shackamaxon" and arrived on 3rd September 1863.  Sadly her stay here was to be short lived she spent the next 3 years with George Melrose and his young family at Parramatta and passed of general debility on 7th August 1866.  Check her profile out to read more.

Searching for descendants of George Robert Miller and Mary Ann Lynch to do a DNA test

You may be aware I am not only passionate about genealogy but also genetic genealogy, which is utilising DNA (spit) to prove the paper trail we have been working on for years.

I would love a willing descendant of George Robert Miller, b: 13 May 1813, Middlesex, Lon, Eng, d: 23 Oct 1883, Bingara, NSW, Aus and Mary Ann Lynch b: abt 1822, d: 20 Feb 1849, Singleton, NSW, Aus to step forward and do a DNA test to PROVE once and for all that the George Robert Miller married to Mary Ann Lynch is the same George Robert Miller that married my 3rd Great Grandmother Mary Ann Jones.  By choosing to do a Family Finder test from Family Tree DNA or 23andme (my DNA is at both) we will see if we have common DNA and bingo, the proof will be in the pudding, so to speak.  Look forward to hearing from you and am happy to help you through the process.

Click on the chart below to see if you descend from this couple.

Surname Projects | DNAeXplained – Genetic Genealogy

Surname Projects | DNAeXplained – Genetic Genealogy: A truly wonderful article by Roberta Estes on Surname Projects at FamilyTreeDNA (FTDNA).  I had not been fully utilising the Advanced Matching, now I am and already have a couple of new leads.  Thanks Roberta!

If you are an Aussie, please also join the Australian Settlers Project and if you have convicts the Australian Convicts Projects, it really does make it easier to spot potential connections that you match. Even more helpful would be to add Surnames and Locations to all of your DNA profiles, whether it is FTDNA or 23andme, it really does make a difference.
